The biggest issue facing the Buffalo Sabres as the trade deadline draws closer is ownership. The Sabres have been sold to billionaire Terry Pegula and he is said to be a hands-on proprietor, and how that impacts the moves the Sabres will make by Feb. 28 will be interesting to watch.
The Sabres are a playoff team but they don't have enough to go deep into the playoffs. And with $4.1 million in cap room, there is space to add expensive talent but whether Pegula will agree to that plan of attack is unknown.
General manager Darcy Regier had two years left on his contract but his job is not secure. Pegula can afford to eat Regier's contract and bring in his own guy. That what's Tampa owner Jeff Vinik did when he hired Steve Yzerman.
Former Pittsburgh GM Craig Patrick has ties to Pegula and speculation is Patrick will be involved with the Sabres in some capacity, perhaps as president.
