The choice, at once a virtual certainty, became anything but for Brent Calloway in recent months.
The talented running back/linebacker from Russellville, Ala., had committed to Alabama after his junior season and went through all of 2010 - including his entire senior season and his invitation to the U.S. Army All-American Game - as a lock for the Crimson Tide.
That is, until Jan. 8, when Calloway came out publicly and stunned the Alabama coaching staff by switching his commitment to Auburn.
The 6-foot-1, 210-pound dual threat said at the time that Alabama's crop of linebackers were too deep for his to compete against, and that Auburn gave Calloway a better chance at running back at the next level. The switch also helped vault Auburn into the top tier of national recruiting classes for 2011.
Since the blockbuster flip, Calloway took his final official visit to Alabama, and has scheduled a formal announcement for 10 a.m. CT today to break the commitment tie between the Tigers and the Tide with an actual signed national letter-of-intent.
