The Italian has been relieved of his head coach duties and placed on "gardening leave" with immediate effect by club chairman Jeremy Peace after losing 13 of his last 18 games.
But it looks clear that the "leave" will be permanent, with Di Matteo unlikely to return. It is a high-risk move at this stage of the season because Albion hve also removed a whole layer of the coaching staff.
Just six months after Di Matteo guided Albion back to the Premier League, he and backroom staff members Eddie Newton and Ade Mafe have left the club with immediate effect.
First team Coach Michael Appleton will assume control while the club considers all available options.
Allardyce was linked with the role, given his record for keeping sides in the top flight, but Peace has a track record of moving for younger and less experienced managers, which would represent a massive gamble. Former Villa manager Martin O'Neill has also been described as a non-starter.
Peace said in a club statement: "This was the unanimous decision of the Football Club's Board of Directors in light of a worrying sequence of results which has seen the club lose 13 of their last 18 games in all competitions, winning only three.
