The Scot maintained his 100 per cent record against homegrown hope John Isner with a gritty victory, ground out in four sets.
Despite the occasional glitch, Murray is coming good just when it matters most, booking a semi-final showdown against Rafa Nadal.
World number one Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer contest the other semi as Monday's rescheduled final edges ever nearer.
As the parasols - thankfully - finally replaced the umbrellas at Flushing Meadows, Murray rarely looked back after taking the first set 7-5 in 52 minutes, soaking up Isner's big hits to counter-punch with panache.
Murray grabbed the initiative courtesy of the only first set break against the big-serving American, who continued his unwanted record of never having made it past the last eight of a Grand Slam, now having failed to beat the 24-year-old in their three meetings.
Helped by a significantly higher first serve percentage than in previous rounds, Murray took the second set 6-4, his 6ft 9in opponent wilting as he was made to chase all over the court in the sultry New York conditions.
