Everton 2 West Brom 1: Phil Neville's Winner Ensures Everton Progress

Phil Neville celebrates his extra-time winner with his team-matesPhil Neville was Everton's unlikely Carling Cup hero as Roy Hodgson endured a miserable return to Merseyside.

Hodgson spent a forgettable short-lived spell in charge at arch rivals Liverpool before moving onto West Brom.

And Neville made it another evening to forget when he curled home the 103rd minute winner as Everton moved into the fourth round.

Chris Brunt's 57th minute penalty looked to have been enough for West Brom before Marouane Fellaini forced extra time when he struck with 89 minutes on the clock.

But with nothing to choose between the two Premiership sides, Neville's fine strike proved the difference.
THE GOALS:
57mins: Brunt sends Mucha the wrong way from the penalty-spot after Peter Odemwingie is tripped by Jan Mucha. (0-1).
89mins: Fellaini finds space on the edge of the West Brom penalty area and drives home the equaliser. (1-1).
103mins: Neville collects Royston Drenthe's pass before curling home. (2-1).

OTHER HIGHLIGHTS:
18mins: Somen Tchoyi wastes a golden chance when he blazes over the crossbar from close-range.
26mins: Peter Odemwengie is next to lose his radar, firing wide with the goal at his mercy after latching onto Phil Jagielka's error.
28mins: Fellaini meets Leighton Baines' cross, but can only glance his header wide.
48mins: Seamus Coleman's weaving run ends with a shot straight at Marton Fulop.
50mins: Fulop is forced into action again, pushing out Denis Stracqualursi's shot.
79mins: Coleman's cross is headed wide by Apostolos Vellios.
81mins: Baines glides past his man and his delivery is met by Fellaini's tame header.
95mins: Tchoyi does all the hard work as he wriggles free, only to shoot over the crossbar when well placed.

REACTION:
Everton assistant Steve Round claimed Neville's winner shock everyone:
"It was a great strike by Phil and we know he can do that. He's done it before and practices in training all the time. To see it fly in surprised many people know doubt, but we are delighted."

On the win:
"It was hard fought. We went direct towards the end and it paid dividends. It was a fantastic goal by Marouane and we know we are a fit and strong unit and we got the edge in extra-time via Phil."

On their Carling Cup hopes:
"We are keen to have a good cup run and it's important to keep our early season momentum going."

Hodgson admitted his West Brom side were made to pay by not converting their chances:
"We missed chances to put the game out of their reach and were punished. On another day we would have scored more. But I was happy with the performance and the response from the display at Swansea. The most positive thing for me is the young players who did well."

On the tie:
"We didn't want extra time. Our priority is the league, you only have to look at our team selection. We wanted the game finished in the 90 minutes but we didn't want to lose it."

WHAT IT MEANS: Everton could do with a cup run and this win won't do their confidence any hardm after a strong start to the season. For West Brom, the Premier League remains their priority although they wouldn't want to have crashed out having come so close to progressing here.
