Samoa maintained their slim hopes of leapfrogging Wales - and reaching the quarter-finals - after a 27-6 win over Fiji in the battle of the Pacific Islanders.Fiji's World Cup campaign is over - and Samoa must now hope Wales slip up in their remaining two games and they can pull off a shock win over South Africa.
The Samoans underlined their dominance here in a poor game when Kahn Fotuali'i scored the first try of the match after the break.
Fiji responded through a try from Netani Edward Talei, but Samoa ensured the win when George Stowers crossed in front of 60,000 fans at Eden Park.
Fiji fly-half Nicky Little apologised for his country's woeful showing, and said: "We did not put up a good enough fight so apologies for that.
"I do not think we fired a shot and in games like this you've got to.
"Some individuals did not want to keep the ball today. We have a number one priority to play our style of rugby and to keep the bums on the seats happy."
In contrast, Samoa skipper Mahonri Schwalger claimed it was a case of doing their job and now pin their hopes on Wales slipping up.
He said: "This game is all about pressure and we kept the pressure on and got some points.
"If you want to win against a strong team like Fiji you have got to get the points when you get down into their 22."
