While Harry Redknapp has described the England job as a "poisoned chalice" and Mission Impossible it still seems nigh on certain that the Spurs manager will be in charge of his country this time next year.Redknapp acknowledges all the pitfalls and problems that accompany one of the most highly pressurised jobs in world football but it remains a scratch he is clearly desperate to itch.
Not on any occasion has Redknapp ever dismissed the theory of replacing Fabio Capello when the Italian's contract runs out after Euro 2012.
There have even been suggestions that Capello's difficult and turbulent reign may come to an end before the tournament, with Redknapp the runaway favourite with both the bookies and pundits to succeeed him.
That still seems unlikely at this stage but Redknapp has admitted that if Capello does sign off his contract with England on a high it will be an even harder job to take.
He said: "It is a poisoned chalice. Good luck to whoever takes over if they win Euro 2012, because it would be like following Sir Alex Ferguson [at Manchester United], wouldn't it?
"But it would be difficult for any Englishman to turn the job down. I'm not pushing myself for the job - whoever gets offered the job, if they're an Englishman, it would be hard to say 'no' because it's your country.
"But it's not a problem. I haven't heard anything from anybody so I'll just get on with my job and see what happens. You never know what happens in this game, do you? You never know what's just around the corner."
While Redknapp may insist he is not pushing himself for the job, it is another timely nudge into the ribs of the FA bigwigs.
He clearly wants the gig and after Capello's seemingly disinterested air ever since last year's disastrous World Cup campaign that is certainly one box ticked.
Not since Sam Allardyce publically trumpeted himself for the post has a manager made it so patently obvious that he wants the England job.
