Capello's Barb And Vermaelen Blow Add to Arsene Wenger's Mounting Problems

Fabio Capello, Arsene Wenger, England training, august 18, 2008There was an element of kicking a man when he is down as Fabio Capello questioned the way Jack Wilshere's injury has been managed by Arsenal.

Arsene Wenger has just been in the end of an 8-2 thrashing at the hands of Manchester United and had his transfer policy questioned to such a point that he went on a panicked spending spree prior to the transfer deadline.

But Capello revealed his frustration on the eve of England's qualifier for the European Championships when his team will face Wales without Wilshere after the midfielder was ruled out for up to three months with an ankle problem.

"It's not my job to say what happened but he suffered (the injury) against Switzerland and then went on holiday for a month," said Capello, suggesting the player should have been treated for the injury after the 2-2 draw in June.

Capello appears to have a point over the management of Wilshere, starting with why he was allowed to go on holiday straight after the final game of the season.

But there was also the farce of keeping the 19-year-old away from the England Under-21s' European Championships tournament in Denmark, only to take him on the tour to the Far East in mid-July.
The result has been Wilshere playing against a Malaysia XI and Hangzhou Greentown rather than against Newcastle on the opening day of the Premier League season.

"It's massively frustrating," said Wilshere on Absolute Radio at the weekend. "It's even more frustrating as I had a successful season and felt I could really push on. I've had a bit of a setback but I'm still feeling good about the season and hopefully I'll be back as soon as possible."

There could be more bad news for Arsenal as Thomas Vermaelen has been reported to have suffered a setback on his return from a long-term Achilles injury and may be heading to Sweden for an operation.

It adds to a host of injury worries Wenger has suffered in recent seasons. Vermaelen appeared to be continually on the verge of a comeback last season but never made it on pitch until May. Other players suffer fitness concerns regularly, although in the case of Robin van Persie they are impact injuries.

It all adds to scrutiny Wenger is under at the moment. One argument is that he needs to freshen up his backroom staff and bring in another assistant for a fresh perspective on why things are going wrong.

Even if the injuries are just bad luck, a different approach may lead to the change of luck the club needs at the moment.

Capello argued he was not an "ogre" when it came to his style of management with his players. At the moment, the managerial monster is Wenger, and even Capello is putting him under pressure.
