Tottenham 0 Man Utd 0: Rafael Off, but Ferguson's Side Hold on to Go Top

Manchester United's Nemanja Vidic challenged by Tottenham's Michael Dawson in a Premier League game at White Hart Lane, January 16 2011Manchester United survived the 74th minute dismissal of Rafael da Silva to clinch the point that ensured they maintained their unbeaten league record and return to the top of the Premier League table.

Harry Redknapp's Tottenham side were unable to take advantage when the United right back collected a second yellow card with Rafael van der Vaart's 81st minute curling effort the closest they came to clinching a winning goal.

Neither side, however, could claim to have created enough chances to justify winning an ultimately disappointing game and it was Sir Alex Ferguson who ended the game by far the happier of the two managers.

The draw moved United above near neighbours Manchester City on goal difference having played two games less while Tottenham failed to return to the top four after being pushed down to fifth place 24 hours earlier.

There seemed little prospect this game would end scoreless during an explosive opening when United's Wayne Rooney and Tottenham's Peter Crouch both spurned early opportunities.

But neither team could produce enough quality in the final third to produce the breakthrough while the flow of the game was punctuated by referee Mike Dean's eagerness to reach for his cards.

Rafael was unfortunate to collect his first booking midway through the first half following a late challenge on Wilson Palacios while his second caution was also harsh, this time for clipping the heels of Benoit Assou-Ekotto.

The young Brazilian could face further punishment for his angry reaction in kicking a television microphone.
