The first base dominoes are falling into place along the Baltimore-Washington Parkway. The Nationals reportedly have offered a two-year deal to Adam LaRoche, their obvious top choice at first now that the Orioles -- who also had talked at length with LaRoche -- have agreed to terms with Derrek Lee. MLB.com reported the Nats' offer to LaRoche shortly after news of the Lee deal emerged.
LaRoche, 31, reportedly turned down a three-year offer from the Orioles said to be in the neighborhood of $21 million. The Nationals aren't inclined to go three years with the former Diamondback, pointing toward a resolution that includes a two-year deal with a higher average annual value.
LaRoche hit .261 with 25 homers, 100 RBI and a .788 OPS last year for Arizona. He previously has played for the Braves, Pirates and Red Sox. In Washington, LaRoche would replace departed free agent Adam Dunn, who signed with the White Sox earlier this winter.
