Ireland's John Duddy of New York, a middleweight (160 pounds) who is coming off of June's 12-round, unanimous decision loss to Mexico's Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. at The Alamodome in San Antonio, Tex., has announced his retirement at the age of 31 years old, according to a statement published by BoxingScene.com."After a great deal of soul-searching, I have decided to retire from boxing. In many ways, continuing to fight would be the easy course of action," wrote Duddy, who had built a large following in New York, where he goes by the name, "Ireland's" John Duddy.
"I have been offered the opportunity to fight Andy Lee on HBO for a purse in excess of $100,000," said Duddy. "A win would put me in position to fight for a world championship. This is not an opportunity that I cast aside lightly...I give you my word, I will not come back."
