HEREDIA, Costa Rica -- I definitely should have known better.A soccer virgin would have had second thoughts before approaching the roughest fans in the stadium (while wearing the opposing team's jersey, no less) and taking a few photos.
I had no excuse. I've attended games in more than two dozen countries, and been in the mix with rowdy supporters from Bradford City to Beijing and from Be?ikta? to Buenos Aires.
What was I thinking?
My only guess is that I was lulled into some sort of catatonic complacency by the overwhelming friendliness of every Tico that was not among the jumping, shouting Alajuelense supporters caged in the northwest corner of the Estadio Eladio Rosabal Cordero. My 12 days in the country were an exercise in "pura vida" hospitality. Costa Ricans are always eager to lend a smile and a helping hand.
That, combined with the gritty, very minor-league quaintness of Club Sport Herediano's dilapidated 8,000-seat stadium, clearly disabled both my rationality and my radar. I'd purchased a garishly awesome yellow-and-red Herediano jersey at the tiny club shop prior to the Dec. 12 opener of the Primera División finals, and was wearing it as I settled into my seat and noticed the Alajuela fans singing to my right.
