Saturday night's light heavyweight (175 pounds) unification clash between WBA king and former Olympian, Beibut Shumenov and southpaw WBO champion Juergen Braehmer of Germany slated for Shemnov's native Kazakhstan apparently will not take place, but there are conflicting reports as to just why.
A Jan. 4 story on ProBoxing-fans.com first reported that the 32-year-old Braehmer (36-2, 29 knockouts) was pulling out of the bout after having cited an illness, this, without having notified either the 27-year-old Shumenov (10-1, six KOs) or his promoter, Dan Goossen, of Goossen Tutor Promotions.
"Bottom line is he didn't inform anyone here that he was sick, and we just happened to find out that he had packed his bags and was on his way to the airport. If you're really sick you don't pack up and walk away," said Goossen, in a Jan. 4 followup report from ESPN.com's Dan Rafael.
"I'm trying to get to the bottom of this," said Goossen. "But you just don't act that way if you're really sick. Right now there's a lot more I need to find out. Beibut is beside himself right now. I've never seen anything like it."
In an apparently conflicting Jan. 3 report by BoxingScene.com, Braehmer and his head trainer, Michael Timm, speaking in Shymkent, Kazakhstan, appear to be ready to thwart Shumenov in the second defense of his crown.
"I am totally focused. My preparation for this fight was very good, and I'm in the best shape of my life," said Braehmer, who is riding a five-fight winning streak that includes four stoppages. "I am eager for the fight for the two belts and also happy to be in another country and meet other people. This is something new for me."
On hand with assistant trainer, Christoph Busch, Timm agreed with the assessment of Braehmer, who is promoted by Universum Box-Promotions.
"Jürgen is completely ready," said Timm. "We've done more sparring sessions than ever, more than 100 rounds. He is ready. We are all very anxious."
