Adrian Beltre and the Rangers finalized a six-year contract Wednesday, with the third baseman joining the defending American League champions on a deal that could be worth nearly $100 million.Beltre, paid $10 million by the Red Sox last season, could make $96 million over the life of his new contract. According to The Associated Press, the Rangers can void the final year of his contract (2016, worth $16 million) if Beltre fails to reach 1,200 total plate appearances in 2014-15 or 600 plate appearances in 2015.
The 13-year veteran will provide a boost to the offense and defense in Texas, with incumbent third baseman Michael Young agreeing to move to designated hitter to accommodate the signing.
"It means a lot," Beltre said at a press conference of Young's willingness to vacate third base. "I have huge respect for Michael. It means a lot he put the team first."
