Andy Murray Wins to Set Up Bangkok Final Showdown with Donald Young

Filed under:

Andy MurrayBritish No. 1 Andy Murray will meet Donald Young in the final of the Thailand Open after edging out Gilles Simon in three sets.

The Scot claimed a 6-2 3-6 6-2 triumph over the Frenchman in Bangkok to win in one hour and 53 minutes.

Young, whom he defeated at the US Open last month but lost to at Indian Wells earlier this year, now stands between him and a third title of the season.

The American was a surprise victor over second seed Gael Monfils, winning 4-6 7-6 (5) 7-6 (5).

Meanwhile, two breaks serve were sufficient for Murray to win the first set, however he was on the receiving end of two breaks himself in the second set as Simon levelled the match.

Murray, the world No. 4 and top seed, had too much quality, however, and he repeated his first-set heroics by taking the deciding set 6-2.

REACTION:
Murray was thrilled to seal his fourth final berth of the year:
"It's great to be in the final. I've only played here a few times and I haven't been back in a while. Hopefully I can go one further than the first time I got to the final here."

On Simon
"It's always tough playing Gilles; he's a very good player. It was always going to be difficult. He's probably going to finish the year in the top 10 again. He doesn't give you many matches. He makes you work hard for it. I was happy I managed to stay patient in the end."

Young was ecstatic afterreachig his first ATP Tour final:
"I'm excited, I'm stoked, all the words that mean you're happy to be in my first final. I've seen a lot of my peers make finals and I'm happy to be in my first one. It's great to beat a top-10 player of the calibre of Gael."
