Roger Federer Serves His Way Into BNP Paribas Masters Semis

Filed under:

Roger FedererRoger Federer rattled off his 12th straight win on Friday, defeating 12th-ranked Jurgen Melzer of Austria 6-1, 7-6 (4) in the quarterfinals at the BNP Paribas Masters in Paris.

Riding an impenetrable serve, Federer defeated the French Open semifinalist and earns his first career berth in the semifinals at the Paris Masters.

During the second-set tiebreaker, the 16-time Grand Slam champion from Switzerland won three straight points to close the match out -- including a vital point off Melzer's serve to go up 5-4. Federer then served an ace to go up 6-4 and sealed the contest at 7-4 with a perfectly placed first serve that Melzer could not return.

The match became competitive in the second set as Melzer held serve throughout. However, Federer only lost three points off his first serve in the match, tallying a winning percentage of 92. He complemented that statistic with 18 aces, while Melzer only generated three aces. Federer's serve was not broken once as Melzer didn't have a single opportunity. Federer's return game was consistent in the first set as well, breaking Melzer twice.

Trial Begins for Man Accused of Manslaughter in Death of Tapout's 'Mask'

Opening statements began on Tuesday in the vehicular manslaughter trial of Jeffrey David Kirby, the driver of a Porsche that allegedly crashed into the Ferrari of Tapout co-founder Charles "Mask" Lewis in an accident that killed Lewis.

Kirby was arrested shortly after the March 11, 2009 crash in Newport Beach, California, registering a .13 blood/alcohol level, well above the legal limit.

According to the Orange County Register, prosecutor Jason Baez told jurors in his opening statement that skid marks show that Kirby was driving at speeds over 100 mph when he lost control of his car and crashed into Lewis.

Sidney Crosby's Unique Hat Trick

Sidney Crosby registered his sixth career hat trick during the Penguins 4-1 win against Calgary on Saturday, and he not only recorded his 200th career goal in the process, he scored three goals in three different ways: Even strength, power play and shorthanded (which was also an empty net goal). Making things even more interesting is the fact he had an opportunity to score on a penalty shot in the first period, only to be turned aside on a spectacular save by Flames goaltender Miikka Kiprusoff, who was outstanding in net, keeping his team in the game when it was outplayed for much of the afternoon.

The first goal, the even strength tally, came on an odd-man rush that was set up by Chris Kunitz, while the power play goal came on a slight deflection from in the slot off of a Paul Martin slap shot from the point. He completed the hat trick late in the third period when the Penguins were in a 6-on-4 situation (shorthanded combined with the Flames pulling their goalie for the extra attacker) allowing Crosby to score from his own end of the ice.

It would have been interesting had he been able to score on the penalty shot, as it would have brought back some memories of Mario Lemieux's New Years Eve performance in 1988 when he scored five goals, five different ways; still one of the best -- if not the best -- single game performances in the history of the league.

Zack Greinke Reportedly Willing to Accept Trade to Yankees

The Yankees still have their hearts set on signing Cliff Lee as a free agent, but their chances at getting a guy to ride shotgun to CC Sabathia might not be up in smoke if he remains with the Rangers.

Royals ace Zack Greinke is reportedly OK with the prospect of a trade sending him to the Yankees. That runs counter to earlier reports that Greinke isn't interested in pitching in the highly pressurized New York market, reports that stemmed from the fact that he has a no-trade clause that includes the Yankees. According to Jeff Passan of Yahoo! Sports, though, Greinke is open to going anywhere with a winning team.

"I wouldn't put it past him to go to New York," Passan's source said. "I don't think he'd rule out anybody. He says he likes New York. Especially because they're winners. He wants to go to a team that wins."

Imagine that, a player who prefers winning to losing. Stop the presses!

D-League Teams Swap Prospects in Four-Player Trade

Two seasons ago, Dontell Jefferson earned a call-up to the Charlotte Bobcats, Walter Sharpe was beginning his NBA career after being selected as a second-round pick by the Detroit Pistons and Lance Allred (pictured) was just a year removed from becoming the first ever legally deaf player to play in the NBA after earning a call-up to the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Today, the three will all be finding new homes in the NBA Development League as teams begin to tinker with their roster less than two weeks into the regular season.

In what will amount to being a three-way trade and then a separate two-way trade, the Utah Flash will trade Jefferson along with New Orleans Hornets' Summer League forward Carlos Wheeler to the Idaho Stampede for Allred and the Dakota Wizards' 2011 second-round pick in the D-League Draft. In return, Dakota will receive Sharpe, who was selected by the Stampede with the first of the second round in this year's draft.

Neither Allred or Wheeler have played in the D-League this season, though both are expected to report to their new teams upon official completion of the trade which will take place when Wheeler signs a new contract with the league.
