Luke Donald Wants to Remain as the King of Spain this Week in Madrid

Luke Donald celebrates winning the Madrid Masters in 2010Luke Donald could be forgiven for skipping this week's Madrid Masters on the European Tour.

Recently, he has chased the biggest prize in golf at the FedEx Cup in America before jetting back to the UK to play in the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship.

It has been a hectic playing schedule and furthermore, his wife, Diane, is expecting their second child shortly.

However, the Englishman has a sense of loyalty to the tournament he won last year, for it was his victory in the Spanish capital that proved to be the springboard for his subsequent success that has seen him move to the top of the world rankings.

Donald, 33, finished tied ninth in Scotland last week to take his season's earnings on the European Tour near to the £3.3 million mark.

Should he repeat his victory in Spain, where he beat Wales' Rhys Davies in 2012 by one shot, then Donald would virtually assure himself of finishing top of the Race to Dubai listings.

He told the European Tour's website: "It had been a while since I'd won, so my victory in Madrid last year gave my confidence a big boost. Any time you win, it always gives you a lot of satisfaction that all the hard work has been worthwhile.

"It was the start of an incredibly consistent run for me, so I've got great memories of my win. When you're playing well you tend to enjoy your golf more, and that was certainly the case for me in Madrid and in the weeks that followed it.

"Because the win opened up a lot of doors for me, I felt duty bound to support the event by going back to defend my title.

"I've had a very busy stretch lately, and my wife's also due to give birth soon so I'll be taking a break after Madrid. It'd be great to sign off with another win to extend my lead at the top of the Race to Dubai."
