Gamble on Schaefer Does Not Pay Off

Filed under:

The Peter Schaefer experiment is over.

The Vancouver Canucks suspended the 33-year-old left winger Wednesday after he cleared NHL waivers and refused to report to their Manitoba farm team. He is now slated to go through waivers again before the Canucks release him outright.

Schaefer's agent Ross Gurney told the Vancouver Province that Schaefer's departure does not signify a failure. Still collecting $600,000 from the Boston Bruins after they bought out his contract two seasons ago, Schaefer opted to stay home in West Vancouver as his wife gets ready to deliver their second child in December.

"Peter can do whatever he wants to," Gurney told the Province, denying that his personal situation factored into his decision not to go to the minors. "That's the great thing about these athletes with some level of financial security. There is ample opportunity in Europe for him, and we'll see if and when he chooses to do that."

But his demotion spells a lost gamble for Canucks management. General manager Mike Gillis opted to sign Schaefer - after he spent last season out of hockey completely - over fan favourite Brendan Morrison. Both had played for the Canucks previously and were attempting to earn a second tour of duty at a drastically-reduced salary that helped Vancouver manage its payroll cap.

Morrison had a decent exhibition season, but his big mistake was telling reporters, including yours truly, on the first day of training camp that he would not accept a demotion to Manitoba if such a scenario transpired. Schaefer, on the other hand, gave the impression that he would gladly go to the minors - but now he is not.

Morrison had more offensive upside, as demonstrated when he played on Vancouver's top line with Markus Naslund and Todd Bertuzzi earlier this decade, and in 2009-10, when he toiled alongside Alex Ovechkin and company for a while. The 35-year-old Morrison was a good fit with the Canucks because he grew up in the Vancouver suburb of Pitt Meadows, B.C., knew the organization well and could be used as a centre or winger while playing both the power play and killing penalties.

But the Canucks opted to keep Schaefer, who was chosen by Vancouver in the third round of the 1995 entry draft and traded to Ottawa in 2002 for defenceman Sami Salo. Seeking more grit on their fourth line, the Canucks felt Schaefer would, in the words of Alain Vigneault, provide more "sandpaper."

Schaefer had only one goal and an assist, which came in his final game Sunday night in a 3-2 loss to Phoenix, in 16 games this season. The goal was a lucky one as he scored seconds after jumping off the bench for his only shift in the third period of an Oct. 26 victory over Colorado.

Vigneault then parked Schaefer on the bench and called for him to improve his play. But he did not. Meanwhile, Morrison signed with Calgary a day after his release from Vancouver and has accumulated 15 points in 20 games with a Flames team that has been terrible at times.

Now, Canucks players and management can only wonder what might have been as the Canucks' top six forwards, outside of the Sedin twins, struggle to produce points consistently.

NOTE: Schaefer's departure means Jeff Tambellini, called up earlier in the week, will likely stay in Vancouver for a while. He assisted on Ryan Kesler's winning goal in a 4-2 victory over Colorado on Wednesday.

Diamondbacks Trade for Zach Duke

Zach DukeDesignated for assignment by the Pirates last week, Zach Duke has already found a new home. Pittsburgh traded the left-hander to the Diamondbacks on Wednesday for a player to be named.

Duke went 8-15 with a 5.82 ERA for the Pirates in 2010. He is 45-70 over parts of six major league seasons, all for Pittsburgh, with a 4.54 ERA, which works out to a below-average mark when adjusted for league and ballpark.

He's averaged 161 innings a season in the big leagues -- a total that has been suppressed by poor performance, not injuries -- so he can give the D'backs plenty of innings at the back of their rotation.

Robert Karlsson Beats Ian Poulter in Play-off Climax to European Season

Filed under:

Sweden's Robert Karlsson ended his season with a victory in the Dubai World Championship - but needed a play-off to overcome Ian Poulter.

On a day when Germany's Martin Kaymer was officially crowned Europe's No.1, Karlsson forced the play-off after a birdie on the final hole as Poulter could only manage a par.

The pair needed two attempts to decide the tournament, but there was an anti-climactic finish when Poulter picked up a one-shot penalty on the green when his marker moved after he dropped his ball on it.

Poulter, who took a six on the par-five, said:"The ball slipped from my hand two or three inches from the coin and the coin flipped over."

However, the mistake did not ultimately cost him the hole because Karlsson made his putt for a birdie.

Karlsson said:"I'm sorry Ian got the punishment, but it certainly made my putt a lot easier."

Poulter had looked on course for victory after stretching his lead to two shots when he holed from off the green on the 12th hole.

But birdies proved elusive for Poulter in the closing stages and Karlsson was able to close the gap and force the extra hole

The 18th hole was the stage and both men played marvellous approach shots to birdie it at the first attempt, setting the stage for Poulter's marker mistake - and Karlsson's victory.

Champion Andre Ward Still 'Hungry' Against Sakio Bika

WBA super middleweight (168 pounds) champion Andre Ward will make the second defense of his crown opposite Sakio Bika in Saturday night's Showtime televised bout from the Oracle Arena in Ward's hometown of Oakland, Calif.

A former Olympic gold medalist with a record of 22-0, that includes 13 knockouts, Ward is considered among the premiere fighters in boxing as he enters the clash with Bika (28-4-2, 19 KOs).

A married, deeply religious father of two young sons and a daughter, Ward earned his Olympic gold in 2004, two years after having endured the death of his father, for whom his trainer, Virgil Hunter, has stepped in and become a male role model.

But a little more than a year ago, Ward was viewed more as a young, up-and-coming prospect with the potential to be great.

All of that was about to change on Nov. 21 of 2009, when Ward, at 19-0, with 13 knockouts, entered his first match of Showtime's Super Six Super Middleweight (168 pounds) World Boxing Classic as a massive underdog against Denmark's WBA titlist Mikkel Kessler.

For not only did Kessler (43-2, 32 KOs) have more than twice as many victories and almost three times as many knockouts as Ward, but he also had held a super middleweight crown for nearly five years, while Ward had been a professional for less than that amount of time.

Yet it was Ward who wound up being the dominant fighter, taking the fight to his more experienced opponent and delivering a savage and bloody beating upon his rival bloody on the way to scoring an 11th-round, technical decision over Kessler, who had earned the WBA title with a seventh-round knockout of Manny Siaca on Dec. 12, 2004 -- six days before Ward made his professional debut by stopping Chris Molina in two rounds.

But that effort was still not enough to earn the respect of his next opponent, Allan Green (29-2, 20 KOs), who labeled Ward "a good young fighter," who "is like a humming bird, buzzing around and trying to get you to offset," adding, "I used to fight like that as an amateur, so I understand his style."

White Sox Offer Arbitration to Konerko, Putz; Decline on Pierzynski, Manny

The deadline to offer free agents arbitration arrives Tuesday night, and the Chicago White Sox found themselves with some decisions to make with some key members of their 2005 World Series team and more recent additions. That decision has come.

On Tuesday the White Sox announced that they had offered arbitration to both Paul Konerko and J.J. Putz, but declined to offer arbitration to A.J. Pierzynski and their two-month rental, Manny Ramirez.

The news that the team isn't offering arbitration for Ramirez is not a surprise at all, as he didn't do much to help the White Sox down the stretch in 2010, and the team has enough headaches as it is with the constant feuding of Ozzie Guillen and Kenny Williams.

The decision to offer Putz isn't surprising either, as the team would like to keep Putz around due to his versatility, especially with the rumors that Bobby Jenks will not be brought back.

Man United 7 Blackburn 1: Five-star Dimitar Berbatov Answers His Critics

Dimitar Berbatov, Michael Carrick, Manchester UnitedDimitar Berbatov scored a spectacular 46-minute hat-trick and five goals in total, the perfect response to growing speculation that his future might be in doubt at Old Trafford after an unproductive period.

The £30 million United striker joins an illustrious list of Andy Cole (1995), Alan Shearer (1999) and Jermain Defoe (2009) to have scored five goals in a Premier League game.

They were the Bulgarian's first goals since a September 19 hat-trick against Liverpool but his overall contribution and enthusiasm were in complete contrast to many of his recent perfunctory performances.

He took just 72 seconds to find the net. After Paul Robinson and Michael Sagado failed to clear properly, Nani crossed from the left with Wayne Rooney flicking on for Berbatov to convert comfortably from six yards.

In the 23rd minute, Rooney produced his second assist of the game, playing a terrific one-two with Ji-Sung Park as the South Korean continued his run and easily beat Robinson.

Berbatov made it 3-0 after 27 minutes after a disastrous back-pass from Pascal Chimbonda played the forward straight through on goal for a 12-yard finish.

And barely 90 seconds after the restart a sublime pass from Berbatov found Nani and allowed the winger to ease his way into the area, past Chimbonda, before dragging the ball back for the Bulgarian to complete his hat-trick from 12 yards.

Moments later, Nani himself claimed the goal he deserved by taking an Anderson pass in his stride, beating the hapless Chimbonda yet again and switching feet before burying his shot past the dive of Robinson.

The massacre continued just after the hour when Rafael sprinted to the by-line and pulled back for Park whose initial shot, blocked by Christopher Samba, fell for Berbatov to score easily from six yards.

His fifth followed after 69 minutes when Anderson fed Berbatov for yet another shot, this blocked by Ryan Nelsen, with the rebound falling kindly for the rampant striker to power into the back of the goal.

The Blackburn consolation came seven minutes from time when Samba rose to head in a Josh Morris cross from six yards.

Berbatov might even have set a record by becoming the first player to score six in a Premier League game but his 89th minute header was touched onto the bar by Robinson.

REACTION:
Sir Alex Ferguson paid tribute to five-goal Berbatov and his partnership with Rooney:
"Today he was back to normal. It was a fantastic achievement and I think Andy Cole was the last one to do it for us here. He could have had a six late on but Robinson made a very good save but him and Rooney were fantastic today. Their movement and passing and one-twos, it was a really top performance.

"They have an understanding anyway from the previous two years so its pleasing to get that. The goals are so important for our goal difference and I don't know where that places us but it helps us improve."

On the all-round display:

"It was a good team performance and Nani and Ji-Sung Park played well, so all round we are really pleased."

On 15 games unbeaten in the league this season:

"he fact we are undefeated says a lot and we are getting some rhythm into our game and you saw that today."

On the pressure on Chelsea:
"It's too early to say that and I don't think it will affect Chelsea at all. The important thing is that the performance registers with us."

Berbatov was understandably elated:
"I don't think anybody could have guessed the scoreline today. It was a great team performance. In the end I'm pleased with the performance and the goals I scored, personally I was very impressed with myself."

On whether he had scored five before?
Yes. I've done that before but it was a long time ago back home. To do it in the Premier League when only four other players have done it, to stand next to Shearer, Andy Cole, is a great honour."

On his partnership with Rooney:
"Of course its good. He's the type of player who knows how I play, I know how he plays, he understands very well how we play on the pitch and it showed today. The things you see on the pitch come from trying very hard on the training ground and sometimes you have a game where everything comes together.

"Lets not forget sometimes you have so many games, one after another, people tend to forget we are human beings and it's difficult. We need a rest as well. Today was excellent, we ran all over the pitch supported each other and scored a lot of goals."

On whether he was worried about his goal drought:

"A little bit. When you are a striker people tend to only look at the goals you score. For me, it is more about how I play, the assists I give, how I link with other players but today I scored so I am very pleased."

Bolton manager Sam Allardyce admitted it was a day to forget:
"It wont be an easy one to forget but its one we will have to try and put behind us. We were completely outplayed from the 72nd second. I'm disappointed with the way the team has gone under but I have to give credit about how ruthless United were. They never gave up and kept exposing our weakness and our players couldn't cope with it.

On United:

The quality of Manchester United goes without saying and the difference between the capabilities of the players they can buy is why we lost 7-1. From my point of view I need a fully committed team who wants to do that but unfortunately we didn't have the desire to do that. To be fair to our players, It would have been a different story if we had those players fit today.

"I said to the coaches today the first 5-10 minutes will be a big test. When I saw their starting line up I thought it would be a big test and from start to finish, lets face it we were not able to cope with it."

On Berbatov:
"Our poor defending and his great ability and the quality of his finishing, he has always been a quality player for me. They used to talk about Anelka being sulky, but he was never sulky with me. He's kick started his season again today." WHAT IT MEANS:
United are top and unbeaten in 29 games - what do you think it means? Rooney continues to look sharp and Berbatov, when he looks interested as he was today, appears like he could prove a potent attacking partnership with the England centre-forward. Admittedly, the desperately miserable Blackburn performance means much of this result has to be put in some sort of perspective but this ranks as one of the few times this season that the Reds have looked their convincing selves. For Rovers, after competently beating Villa last week, this was one to write off as a bad day at the office ... or at least that's what Allardyce will be saying.
